Mechanical Engineering

Under the direction of Emily Winfield, PE, the mechanical team at Design Alaska is the largest department in the company. With a broad range of mechanical engineering experience, our team also holds certificates and advanced degrees in many fields of expertise, such as fire protection, LEED, commissioning, and controls systems.

We understand the critical path of design, and work closely with other disciplines to ensure the project is thoroughly coordinated with the final submittal. The mechanical system is strenuously reviewed to optimize energy efficiency and to ensure the system serves the client’s needs. We routinely work on Design-Build projects with tight construction schedules, and are accustomed to working within strict project parameters.

The department has considerable design experience with new construction and renovation of commercial buildings, military installations, recreational facilities, light industrial facilities, health care facilities, kitchens, power plants, bulk fuel storage, and working in rural locations. This experience extends to all phases of mechanical systems design, including energy usage analysis and modeling, lifecycle estimating, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning), refrigeration, plumbing systems, utilities, seismic restraint of mechanical systems, fire protection, and controls. The mechanical engineering department is also responsible for design of utilidor piping systems, direct bury district heating utilities, and underground fuel tanks and associated piping.
