This State of Alaska Department of Education and Early Development project for the Lower Yukon School District included the renovation of an existing 7,035 square foot high school and design of a new 4,320 square foot section to replace the middle school in Mountain Village, Alaska. The new facility connects a separate existing high school building to an existing elementary building with a middle school/circulation/main entry addition to better integrate school administrative, library, kitchen and cafeteria facilities with the classrooms, as well as create a welcoming lobby/reception area and native Yupik cultural center.

Major improvements within the existing buildings included upgrade of the science laboratory for safety and efficiency, kitchen renovation and expansion to meet state food service quality standards, finish, lighting and automatic sprinkler system upgrades, playground upgrades and relocation, and new interior and exterior camera security system. The project included consolidation of two separate libraries into a single location for efficient monitoring and after hours use by the community. The library features a glass walled connected to the adjacent display of Yupik artifacts and artwork. The arrangement supports educational opportunities by local Yupik Elders.

The facility was fully occupied during the school year so construction in the occupied areas was divided into five separate construction phases. Construction of the addition was accelerated to provide swing space for the phasing to allow year round construction.

The project is now complete and in use by the students, teachers, and faculty of Ignatius Beans School.
